The loss of veteran netminder Ken Wregget opened the window of opportunity in Pittsburgh sooner than expected for 25-year-old Peter Skudra last season and the young netminder capitalized with a vengance. Signed as a free agent by the Pens just prior to the start of the 1997-98 campaign, Skudra turned heads around the league by posting the league's best goals against average and save percentage among rookie netminders. At season's end, the popular native of Riga, Latvia was honored by the organization as the Penguins' 1998 Rookie of the Year.
